Many Indianapolis area kids are out of school on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and local museums are offering free admission, plus special 2022 MLK Day programming. These opportunities will help your kids learn and remember the life and legacy of Dr. King. Celebrate MLK Day with free admission to Newfields on Sunday, January 17.  Admission is free but advanced tickets are required. Newfields is closed on Mondays, therefore this celebration will take place the day before Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Rhythm! Discovery Center. Admission is free, but space is limited, so reserve tickets in advance. Indianapolis soul singer, Bashiri Asad will perform at 11 am & 3 pm.

Free MLK Day Museum Admission at White River State Park

Enjoy free parking and admission to White River State Park and other nearby attractions. For the past 20 years, White River State Park  has partnered with Gleaners Food Bank of Indianato host an annual event on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In lieu of canned goods, visitors are asked to make monetary donations to Gleaners Food Bank via “dip jars” around the park and the museums.  Parking at White River State Park Garage will be free from 10 am-7 pm.

Celebrate Dr. King’s dream and explore the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equity in America at the Indiana State Museum. Watch some of Dr. King’s most iconic speeches, enjoy a performance by Meraki Dance Company, and participate in activities that reflect on what you can do to ensure the dream lives on for future generations.

IMAX® Theater

Venture into deep space for a fascinating look at asteroids, their cosmic origins, and the potential threat they pose to our world with the IMAX original film “Asteroid Hunters.” Asteroid Hunters will not be in 3D on MLK Day. Showtimes are: 11:30 am, 1 pm, 2:30 pm, and 4 pm. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is met. 

NCAA Hall of Champions

Experience the Exhibit: The Long-Standing Tradition of the NCAA Football Championships from 10 am-5 pm. Guests can also do a scavenger hunt and register for hourly raffle prizes for NCAA merchandise.

The Indianapolis Zoo at White River State Park

Weather permitting, the hardier animals will be out to enjoy the day. Or, duck in to the indoor exhibits; Oceans, Dolphin Dome, Deserts Dome, Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center and Hilbert Conservatory. There will be dolphin shows at 12:30 and 2 pm. Café on the Commons will have $5 combo meal that includes a  hot dog, chips, & a drink.

Conner Prairie

Join Conner Prairie in the Welcome Center for a variety of activities celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.  Check out the new social justice quilt project in Makesmith Workshop or explore a host of activities about voting rights and the question of housing and gerrymandering. Capacity is limited. Entry is by timed ticket only.
