December Special Needs Activities and Events in Indianapolis | 2019

Tis the season for a calendar full of family fun. Explore the season with some of our top picks for December and keep a close eye on the calendar was we continue to add even more fun for the whole family.

Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation – Special needs parents can enjoy a little break while their children with special needs enjoy an evening of swimming, eating dinner and watching a movie. This Adaptive Youth Fun Night is designed especially for individuals with disabilities. Registration is required.


December Special Needs and Adaptive Activities

Sensory Friendly Santa

When: Various Dates and Times

Sensory friendly Santas can be found at the Greenwood Park Mall, Castleton Square Mall, The Fashion Mall, Perry Crossing, Collage Mall, Rhodius Park, and Conner Prairie.

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the IRT

When: December 8 at 2 pm and December 26 at 1 pm

An ASL/AD performance will take place on December 8. Those with sensory needs can enjoy a sensory friendly show on December 26.

Village Dance Studio’s Nutcracker Short & Suite at Grace Church

When: December 15 at 2 and 4 pm

The house lights will be slightly raised, sound will be adjusted (lower at 2 pm for those with sensory needs and higher at 4 pm for those hard of hearing). Families can also enjoy various traditional and non-traditional seating options and a movement space that will be open in the back for anyone who wants to dance along.

Elf the Musical at The Tarkington

When: December 22 at 2 pm

This showing of the holiday classic will be an inclusive performance, along with ASL interpreters/audio describers.

Sensory Friendly Morning at Conner Prairie

When: December 28 from 9-10 am

Conner Prairie will be open one hour early for those with Sensory Differences and their families. Lights will be dimmed and noises will be kept to a minimum to ensure a more sensory friendly environment.
